DENNIS HARTLEY

Dennis Hartley played 202 games for Hunslet between 1961 and 1966. He was an outstanding enforcer in a formidable pack of forwards which created the platform for a very successful period for the club. Hunslet were huge underdogs in the Yorkshire Cup Final in 1962 against Hull KR but triumphed for the first time since 1908 in a game in which Hartley scored a drop goal for the only time in his career. He was one of the outstanding players in the 1965 Wembley defeat by Wigan. He won 4 caps for Great Britain whilst at Hunslet.

GEOFF GUNNEY

Geoff Gunney’s playing career with Hunslet spanned 23 seasons and saw him play 579 games. There have been few greater one club servants in the game’s history. He made 11 appearances for Great Britain and 9 for Yorkshire. He was the youngest forward at 21 to tour Australia with the British Lions in 1954 and he made a second trip to the Southern Hemisphere as a member of Great Britain’s World Cup team 3 years later. At the end of the 1957 World Cup tournament he was selected in the “Rest of the World” team to play Australia and in the “Northern Hemisphere” team against New Zealand. He played in the last game at Parkside in 1973.

BRIAN GABBITAS

Brian Gabbitas was one of the most talented players to pull on a Hunslet shirt and was known and respected throughout the game as an outstanding stand off and a sportsman of the highest quality. He signed for Hunslet as a 17 year old in 1952 and played 349 games over the following fourteen seasons. He played 3 times for Yorkshire and was capped for Great Britain. His greatest footballing claim to fame will always be the 1965 Wembley Cup Final when he won the Lance Todd Trophy (shared with Ray Ashby) for being the player of the match.

ALF BURNELL

Alf “Ginger” Burnell emerged as one of the outstanding half backs in the immediate post war period. His career was delayed by the Second World War but he played 351 matches for Hunslet before retiring in 1958. He helped Yorkshire win the County Championship in 1946 representing his county on 5 occasions in all. His 4 England caps were against Wales (2) and France (2). He was selected for Great Britain against New Zealand in 1951 and played in all 3 tests in the series triumph. He toured with the British Lions in 1954 playing 17 times including one test against New Zealand.

ALBERT GOLDTHORPE

Albert Goldthorpe made his debut for Hunslet in 1888 aged 16 and played 659 games before retiring in 1910 having scored over 1500 points. He was probably the finest individual talent in the game and was one of the most popular players in English rugby both before and after the split. “Ahr Albert”, as he was affectionately known, led the team to unprecedented success in Hunslet’s greatest ever season, 1907 – 8, when they won all four trophies. He gave over 40 years of his life in the service of the Hunslet club as player, committee member and secretary/manager.

JOHN WOLFORD

John Wolford was a legend in Rugby League when he joined Hunslet in 1981 at the age of 35. However he enjoyed a remarkable Indian Summer to his career and fully justified Hunslet’s decision to sign him. Versatile, durable and highly skilled he took the loose forward role and played 113 games before his final Rugby League appearance against Doncaster in 1985. He inspired the team in the 1983 – 4 campaign to gain promotion back to the First Division appearing in 35 of the 38 matches.
