1938 Programme Championship Final 4865

Contributor: Stephen McGrail
Decade: 1930s
Heritage Number: 64

Arguably the most famous rugby league game ever staged in Leeds took place on April 30th 1938. Leeds faced Hunslet in the Championship Final at Elland Road. The derby was originally due to be played at Belle Vue, Wakefield but was switched to Leeds United's ground at the request of both clubs. At the time the crowd of 54,312 was the biggest for a Rugby league match played in England and it still holds the record for the City of Leeds. Hunslet who had finished top of the table with Leeds in second emerged victorious winning 8-2through tries by Ernest Winter and Jimmy O'Sullivan plus a Jack Walkington drop goal after Ted Tattersfield had kicked the Loiners ahead with a penalty. This programme is believed to have belonged to James Goldthorpe.
