Alonzo Walker 263

Contributor: Pat Benatmane
Decade: 1910s

Alonzo was born in Pudsey in 1885. His occupation was Weft Man in a cloth factory, according to the 1911 census. Throughout the war there was a great demand for uniforms and Yorkshire factories provided much of the cloth for them. The forces swelled their numbers so quickly that sometimes no uniforms were provided. For example, the Leeds Pals, when they were formed, went to train at Colsterdale near Masham and had no uniforms until the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Brotherton, paid for them. It seems likely that Alonzo did this vital work throughout the hostilities.

Heritage number 442. Seasons played 1914/15, 1916/17, 1917/18, War League of 1918/19, 1919/20, 1920/21. Debut v Salford. Played forward. 68 appearances. 2 goals, 4 tries = 16 points. Also guest appearance on 11 Nov 1916 for Leeds.
